What is happening: Canada’s largest railroad Canadian National have purchased the trucking company Trans X Ltd.
Why is this happening: The railroad are looking to expand their intermodal and refrigerated services.
Trans X: The trucking company business line includes truckload, LTL, intermodal, warehousing, and freight forwarding. They will remain based in Winnipeg. They have 1,500 trucks, 1,000 intermodal containers, and 4,000 trailers within their ranks. They also have 12 terminals across Western and Eastern Canada.
What did CN spokesperson Patrick Waldron say: “This brings us the ability to enhance our intermodal service offering for consumer goods, especially in the fast-growing temperature controlled market.”
What did CN chief executive Jean-Jacques Ruest say: “Next year, with the capacity that we are adding currently as we speak in some of the newer re-stackers, containers and chassis coming into service in the fourth quarter, when it comes to 2019, we will have the ability to go back in the marketplace to compete more head-to-head with long haul trucking.”
