What is happening: The food giant Mondelez has responded to a scathing Greenpeace report on its pal oil supply chain practices. The company have cut ties with 12 separate suppliers of palm oil.
Why is this happening: There is much controversy surrounding the palm oil industry at the moment, as it is infested with poor environmental and labor practices.
Mondelez: The company are aiming for 100% transparency and sustainability. They believe their current palm oil supply chain did not meet these standards, and are calling on suppliers to help identify areas at risk from deforestation by mapping concessions.
What did Greenpeace say: “If Mondelez is serious about ‘building the best snacking company in the world,’ then it needs to drop dirty palm oil and stop sourcing from destructive producer groups.”
What did Mondelez say: “While Mondelez International supports efforts to identify companies growing palm oil unsustainably and provide an opportunity to reform, engagement must deliver results.”
