What is happening: The US, Mexico, and Canada have signed a new trade deal, with the respective heads of state meeting at the 2018 G-20 Leaders Summit in Argentina.
Why is this happening: This new USMCA agreement will eventually replace NAFTA. They have been negotiating to bring the NAFTA agreement up to date since 2016.
What next: Each head of state must take the deal to their legislature for approval.
When is this happening: Mexico’s Economy Secretary Ildefonso Guajardo recently claimed the deal could be in place in late 2019.
What did Donald Trump say: “The USMCA is the largest, most significant, modern and balanced trade agreement in recent history. All of our countries will benefit greatly.”
