What is happening: New York City is to roll out 2,500 new trucks with better visibility in order to reduce the number of traffic incidents in the area. They will replace the 10% of NYC’s fleet which get retired each year.
How do they work: The new trucks will include fewer blind spots, more windows, lower cabs, and smaller hoods to enhance visibility. Reaction time for divers is said to be 70% slower in normal trucks than in these new vehicles.
Vehicles: The trucks in question include fire engines, garbage trucks, and dump trucks.
Initiative: This is part of NYC’s ‘Vision Zero’ initiative to end traffic accidents.
What did DCAS Deputy Commissioner and NYC Chief Fleet Officer Keith Kerman say: “These technologies save lives and money and should be standard on all base fleet vehicles. DCAS calls on the fleet industry to separate safety options from luxury items in marketing vehicles.”
