What is happening: IKEA are set to open their first American city centre store.
Where is this happening: Manhattan, 999 Third Avenue.
When is this happening: The store will open its doors in the Spring on next year.
Why is this happening: IKEA are looking to change up their sales strategy as more people move to urban areas across the globe. By the year 2030, around 60% of the world’s population will live in big cities. This move to cities will come at a price for buyers, who will be looking to furnish smaller homes with less cash.
Future plans: IKEA plan to roll out 30 of these urban stores over the next two years across the US and Europe.
What did IKEA say: “[The store will] give customers the opportunity to discover, select and order IKEA products for delivery to their home, which is what urban residents want and need. [It will focus on] smart solutions for urban living and small spaces.”
What did country manager of IKEA Retail U.S, Lars Petersson say: “We recognize that we are in a rapidly changing retail environment, and to be fit for long-term growth, IKEA is transforming in a way that lets us meet our customers where they are. New York City is the natural choice to open the first city center store — the most vibrant, dynamic city in the US, and the epicenter of retail, business, and culture.”
