What is happening: The engine-maker Cummins Inc has committed to work to reduce harmful emissions from heavy duty trucks. They want to cut back on greenhouse gases to slow down climate change.
Emissions: Road freight currently accounts for 7% of total emissions, a serious issue that needs to be addressed.
Demand: However, despite Cummins wanting to make a difference with new technology, most trucking companies will not touch such tech unless it can pay for itself within 18 months.
Waste: Cummins are therefore having to hold back some potentially helpful innovations purely because customers will not go for them.
Regulations: Changes in carbon tax or emission regulations would force companies to invest in environment-helping technology, but this doesn’t seem to be on the cards in the US.
