What is happening: Heavy-duty truck orders declined dramatically at the end of 2018 after enjoying months of blistering binge orders earlier in the year.
The numbers: Companies ordered just 21,300 Class 8 trucks in December. This represented a 24% reduction from November, and a whopping 43% from December 2017.
Why is this happening: Companies may have reached their expansion limits, and could now be responding to softening freight demand indicators.
Future: This could result in Class 8 order cancellations as we begin 2019. As growth recedes, these cancellations are likely to grow and grow. Heavy-duty truck manufacturers will be hoping to keep orders ticking over.
