What is happening: Mining giant Rio Tinto PLC is pioneering 1,000 mile’s worth of autonomous rail transport in the Australian outback.
AutoHaul: The autonomous transport system is called AutoHaul, and has been operating in a self driving mode since last month.
Example: This rail transport in a remote region of Australia could be the prime example for any US networks looking to achieve something similar. In fact, railroad officials from both the US and Canada are actually flying in to view the technology in question.
Future: Freight railroads in the US have been calling out for such automation for some time now. It would make American railroads more fluid, efficient, safer, and would also save on labor costs.
