What is happening: Maersk CEO, Soren Skou, claims that imports to the US will drop off throughout 2019.
NRF: The National Retail Federation say that 2018 record import numbers were only due to rushes to beat upcoming tariffs. NRF predict import values of 1.75 million TEUs in January, and 1.67 million in February. This would be a downturn from November, 1.81 million, and December, 1.79 million.
Brexit: Soren also claimed that a no deal Brexit would not really hit his company, as it does not transport much between the UK and mainland Europe anyway.
Chinese New Year: Skou claims that a downturn has not yet been seen due to imports in time for Chinese New Year. A lot of factories in China shut down for the holiday.
What did Maersk CEO, Soren Skou say: “We expect that trade imports to the U.S. will drop a little bit in the coming quarters. At some point that will be seen in the numbers.”
