What is happening: The rise of e-commerce is changing some long-running trends in logistics employment and hiring across the US.
Hiring: Companies in the warehousing and parcel sectors hired around 22,000 new employees in January, despite the usual slowdown in this period, post holiday season.
Why is this happening: The hiring boost has likely come around for a number of reasons, including post-holiday returns through January. With an e-commerce boom has come with it the emergence of new regional hubs, distribution centres, and smaller fulfilment centres, all of which need staff.
Trucking: There were also 3,600 trucking jobs added last month, and 43,000 in the past 12 months now, yet another example of hiring boosts.
Trends: These boosts are bucking long-running trends of a slowdown in this period of the year, and it seems as though e-commerce is the contributing factor.
